The “stealth” development of one of the tabletop’s most intriguing improvisation tools has finally gone public. Manuel Nobili, the creator behind the Roll to Life NPC personality dice, chose Scotland’s oldest roleplaying convention, Conpulsion, to mark his first physical retail appearance. The 2026 event, held at the historic Pleasance venue, saw the project transition from a private table aid to a boutique tabletop brand that prioritises environmental ethics over industry-standard plastics.
Originally designed by Nobili to solve his own quick NPC challenges during RPG sessions as a game master, the set of six large wooden dice was used in secret for months. It was only when his regular players began to question the uncanny depth and consistency of his non-player characters that Nobili revealed his system. This appearance in Edinburgh marks a significant step for the creator, moving from a conservative growth strategy on Etsy to a physical showcase.
According to Nobili, the dice were born out of a personal need for a more efficient way to manage game mastering. He told Geek Native that he had been using the prototypes privately until his players became curious enough to ask about the mechanics behind his believable NPCs.
The Roll to Life system is notable for its rejection of plastic. In a move Nobili describes as a “pro-sustainability choice,” the dice are constructed from wood and paper rather than the standard resin or deep-engraving techniques common in the hobby. This artisanal approach aligns with the 2026 Conpulsion theme, “On Top of the World,” which focuses on inclusive and accessible design, providing a tactile, large-format alternative to traditional polyhedrals.
The set includes three specific “Personality” dice (P1, P2, and P3), a “Communication” die (COM), a “Conversation Prompt” die (POP), and a “Temporary Twist” die (TEMP). Unlike random tables that require multiple rolls and page-flipping, the Roll to Life system allows a game master to generate 12 personality traits, 12 quirks, and specific conversation topics with a single toss. The “TEMP” die adds a layer of narrative volatility, introducing six temporary twists to ensure that even a recurring merchant or guard feels unpredictable.

While the physical debut has been a success, Nobili remains a man of mystery regarding the future. When pressed by Geek Native about upcoming projects, the designer admitted he was mulling new ideas but refused to be drawn on specifics. This commitment to a slow, deliberate development cycle suggests that whatever follows Roll to Life will likely stay in the shadows until it is ready to be revealed.
