Pelgrane Press has launched a crowdfunding campaign for Ballad Hunters, a new roleplaying game set in the atmospheric and superstitious landscapes of 1813 Britain. Currently nearing its £20,000 goal on Kickstarter, the project tasks players with tracking down folk ballads that have spontaneously manifested as dangerous, reality-warping phenomena.
As “Ballad Hunters,” the characters use unique ballad magic to decipher lyrical clues hidden in traditional songs and save local communities from supernatural harm. Developed by Tristan Zimmerman and utilising the GUMSHOE Labs system, the game represents a distinct shift toward historical investigation blended with musical mythology, anchoring its mechanics in the rhythm of the Regency era.
Investigative Mechanics and the Compass Verse
The game is built on the GUMSHOE Labs framework, a streamlined evolution of the investigative system used in acclaimed titles like Trail of Cthulhu and The Esoterrorists. Pelgrane Press ensures that the narrative never stalls due to a failed roll; instead, the focus remains on how players interpret the information they find. A primary innovation in this title is the “compass verse” mechanic, which integrates the structure of historical ballads directly into the gameplay loop. This ensures that the rhythmic and narrative logic of folk music dictates the flow of the investigation, forcing players to think like the balladeers of old.
Historical Authenticity and Human Creativity
The setting is deeply rooted in the Francis James Child collection of ballads, providing a layer of historical authority that will appeal to folklore enthusiasts. Pelgrane Press has taken a firm stance on the book’s production, explicitly stating that the project is “made by humans,” with no AI involvement in the writing or artwork. This commitment to craft is reflected in the detailed world-building, which positions players at the intersection of the Napoleonic Wars and a sudden surge of “haunted” songs.
The Hunter’s Burden
The role of a hunter is not merely one of combat but of deep cultural deciphering. Players must understand the stories they are hunting to neutralise them.
Britain, 1813: Folk ballads are coming to life. Armed with ballad magic, you decipher clues in each song and save the people affected.”
The game includes a variety of historical ballads ready to play, providing a toolkit for GMs to create haunting mysteries from familiar lyrics. The focus on tabletop mechanics ensures that the “magic” feels grounded in the era’s logic rather than high-fantasy tropes.

Rewards and Procurement
The reward structure offers several entry points for those looking to join the hunt. Digital-only supporters can secure the core roleplaying game in PDF format for £25. Those preferring physical media can opt for the £50 tier, which provides the hardback edition. Higher-tier options, such as the £75 Balladeer level, bundle the core book with a wirebound songbook and additional resources, such as Shanty Hunters. For the most dedicated collectors, the £1,000 Queen of Fairy tier even includes a physical musical instrument sourced specifically for the backer to match the theme of the game.
The Ballad Hunters campaign is an all-or-nothing project, meaning it will only proceed if it meets its funding target by Thursday, 30 April 2026. If successful, Pelgrane Press estimates that the finished books and rewards will be delivered to backers in March 2027.
