Kildare-based independent studio Old Oak Games has launched a highly successful Kickstarter campaign for Beyond the Woods, an official dark fantasy campaign setting for the acclaimed Legend in the Mist roleplaying game. Set in the Irish mythology-inspired lands of Tír Nascath, the project has already soared past its initial funding goal, raising over £133,000 from eager backers.
The campaign is live now and seeking funding to print two massive new sourcebooks: the Wanderer’s Handbook and the Lorekeeper’s Guide.
Led by veteran designer Emmet Byrne, known for his work on Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound and Broken Weave, Old Oak Games previously funded a highly successful 5E version of this setting in early 2025. Now, the studio has partnered directly with Son of Oak Game Studio to adapt the rich, haunting lore of Tír Nascath for their acclaimed narrative-first game engine.
The Fading Light of the Golden Oak
The world of Tír Nascath is defined by its tragic history. Centuries ago, a spectral legion known as the Sluagh swept across the land, leaving devastated ruins and soulless husks called the Marvach in their wake. The only survivors found refuge in Céad Darach, a city protected by the magical light of the Golden Oak.
That light is now failing.
Players take on the role of wanderers forced to leave the safety of the city to explore the forgotten, cursed wilderness in search of a way to save their home. To support this, Beyond the Woods introduces a robust hexcrawl exploration system. Groups drive the story using a physical map of Tír Nascath, exploring hex by hex and marking their discoveries, reclaimed ruins, and fallen allies with custom stickers.
Irish Myth and Magic
Beyond the Woods trades traditional fantasy tropes for a darker, folkloric atmosphere. The expansion adds over fifty new Theme Kits to the Legend in the Mist system, allowing players to build heroes inspired by ancient legends. Options include the lore-keeping Seanchaí, or warriors harnessing the berserker rage of the Ríastrad.
The books also introduce four new Ways of Magic, including the druidic power of the Draoi, the cursed blood of the Irish werewolf, and the ominous ravens of the Morrigan. Players will need these new abilities to survive encounters with terrifying creatures pulled directly from Irish mythology, such as the keening Bean Sí, the blood-sucking Avartach, and the original headless horseman, the Dúlachán.
