IDW Games has launched a massive Kickstarter campaign to bring the King of the Monsters to the tabletop. Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game is a new, official card-based survival game set in the publisher’s comic-inspired Kai-Sei Era. The project has already smashed its initial funding target, raising over £100,000 to bring the 300-page hardcover rulebook and its miniatures to print.
Set decades after Godzilla’s first appearance in 1954, humanity has been forced to adapt to a reality where colossal beasts constantly threaten land, sea, and sky. Players take on the roles of the boots on the ground, undertaking high-stakes missions to ensure humanity survives another sunrise.
Rather than relying on traditional polyhedral dice, the game engine uses a standard deck of 52 playing cards. Player characters are defined by four core stats: Constitution, Mindfulness, Intelligence, and Strength. When facing challenges, players draw a target number of cards, aiming to hit specific suits or values to succeed.
The game is designed to be highly cinematic, driven by a persistent “Crisis Clock” that ticks away in the background. Drawing Joker cards advances this clock, steadily escalating the danger and drawing the attention of the kaiju themselves.
Players can choose from twelve distinct character classes spread across command, combat, special operations, and support roles. Options range from battle-hardened Soldiers and cunning Thieves to mutated Scientists searching for a cure. There are even playable origin options for Mutants and Half-Breeds for those seeking abilities beyond baseline humanity.
Gods of the Tabletop
The core rulebook features an extensive roster of iconic Toho monsters, including Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Destoroyah, Anguirus, and Biollante. Each creature operates as a force of nature with signature traits and devastating special rules.
For game masters wanting to introduce new threats, a comprehensive “Kaiju Creator” provides robust mechanics for building custom behemoths. Furthermore, the book includes a dedicated alternate ruleset that allows players to take control of the kaiju themselves, slugging it out on a colossal scale.
Learn to Play Demo

For groups wanting to test the mechanics before committing, IDW Games has released the official Learn to Play Guide online. Originally showcased as a live demo at PAX Unplugged 2025, this digital booklet provides a streamlined overview of the card-based resolution system, the Crisis Clock, and the fundamental rules for surviving a kaiju encounter.

The utter lack of an accessible Kickstarter story will be a red flag to some potential backers, though.
