Japanese entertainment titan Toho Co., Ltd. has officially announced its acquisition of UK-based distributor Anime Limited, marking a decisive shift in how anime will be distributed across Europe.

The deal, confirmed today, sees Toho acquire 100% of Anime Limited from Plaion Pictures. The UK distributor will now operate as a subsidiary of Toho Global, the company’s international arm.
Crucially, this is not just a buyout; it is a planting of the flag. Toho has confirmed it will establish its European regional headquarters in London “within this year”, cementing the UK as its primary bridgehead into the EMEA market.
The “Strategic Alliance” with Plaion
For industry watchers, the most interesting detail in the press release is what happens to the rest of Europe. While Toho is taking direct control of the UK and France (Anime Limited’s primary territories), they are not cutting ties with the seller.
Toho and Plaion Pictures have agreed to a “strategic alliance”. Under this new structure, Plaion will continue to extend Toho’s distribution reach into Germany, Italy, and other European markets. This suggests a hybrid model: direct Toho control in key English and French-speaking territories, and partnership distribution elsewhere.
Stability for Staff and Fans
The announcement provides immediate stability for Anime Limited, which has faced uncertainty in recent months. The press release explicitly states that the “full Anime Limited staff” has been retained.
This formalises the news that co-founder Andrew Partridge had previously signalled his intent to leave the company. As reported, Partridge has reversed that decision to lead the new subsidiary.
The official statement notes:
The new subsidiary company has retained Anime Limited founder and Managing Director Andrew Partridge and the full Anime Limited staff. This acquisition will provide Toho with immediate film distribution, home video, TV sales, and merchandise and licensing capabilities in the UK and France.”
The “Vision 2032” Context
Toho is currently executing its “Vision 2032” strategy, which aggressively targets overseas growth. This acquisition completes a rapid-fire expansion trifecta:
- October 2024: Toho acquires US distributor GKIDS.
- November 2024: Toho launches Toho Entertainment Asia in Singapore.
- December 2025: Toho acquires Anime Limited and establishes a London HQ.
By securing bases in Asia, North America, and now Europe, Toho has effectively built a global distribution network in under 18 months, reducing its reliance on third-party licensors.
The business logic is clear. Toho cites market data projecting the European anime market to grow from $4.77 billion in 2024 to $9.05 billion by 2030. With their own pipeline now established, Toho is positioned to capture a significantly larger slice of that revenue.
For fans, this likely signals a future in which Toho titles, such as the massive Godzilla franchise or the works of Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, Weathering With You), arrive in the UK faster and with greater support for premium merchandise.
