Owlcat Games has released a collection of free desktop and mobile wallpapers for its forthcoming cRPG, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. The high-definition art showcases the grimdark aesthetic of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, focusing on the decay and gothic hopelessness central to the game’s theme.
The new title is the latest project from the publisher, known for its work on the well-received Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. While Rogue Trader put players in the shoes of a powerful privateer, Dark Heresy takes a different approach, casting the player as an acolyte of the feared and secretive Imperial Inquisition. The game is set in the Calixis Sector against the backdrop of the Noctis Aeterna, where players must lead a warband to investigate heresy and root out the corrupting influence of Chaos.
Following a hands-off demo at gamescom 2025, which saw a five-person party investigating disappearances on the planet Scintilla, Owlcat has continued to release details about the game. A recent developer diary highlighted the game’s focus on deep investigation mechanics and a tactical, turn-based combat system. Players will be forced to make difficult choices with significant consequences, shaping the fate of the sector while testing their loyalty to the Emperor.
Dark Heresy promises to expand on the ideas introduced in Rogue Trader, featuring fully voiced dialogues and a diverse range of companions. Players can build their Inquisitorial warband with characters such as a veteran Catachan Guardsman, a towering Ogryn, and even recruit forbidden xenos allies, including a Kroot mercenary and an Aeldari psyker.
