AI content policy

This page details Geek Native’s policy on AI-created content, AI assistance in content creation, and our use of machine learning technology.

Our Current Stance

Geek Native is committed to a sustainable business model that supports human-created articles and art. We will never make money from AI art, and we do not use generative AI to produce our core content.

We recognise the significant difference between AI technology being used to displace human creators and the same technology being used to drive essential progress in medicine and science. Our focus is on ensuring the ethical health of the creative and gaming industries.

The Impact of AI on Independent Publishing

As a news publisher, we want to be honest about the challenges we face. Like many independent sites, Geek Native has suffered significantly from the rise of “AI Overviews” in Search. These features scrape our human-written content to provide answers directly on search pages, which has dramatically reduced our traffic and revenue. This makes our commitment to human-centric content more difficult, but also more vital.

Reporting on AI

Geek Native may write about a game, product, or service that has used AI. Reporting on these developments is part of our commitment to keeping our readers informed about the industry’s evolution. Mentioning these products does not constitute an endorsement of the technology used by those third parties.

What We Use (Infrastructure & Assistance)

Like most modern websites, Geek Native utilises essential services that incorporate machine learning for defensive and assistive purposes. These include:

  • Gmail: Used for communication, utilising AI for security, spam filtering, and assistive writing features.
  • Cloudflare: Used for site security, DDoS protection, and performance optimisation.
  • Grammarly: Used for spellchecking and grammar to maintain editorial standards (but not content creation).
  • Notion: Used for internal organisation, storing notes, and producing summaries.

Historical Usage (Tools We Have Phased Out)

In the interest of full transparency, we acknowledge that we have used generative or AI-assisted tools in the past. However, we have made the editorial decision to move away from them. We no longer use:

  • Quillbot: Previously used for spellchecking and assisting with the rewriting of press releases.
  • IMG Larger: Previously used to enhance or upscale thumbnails.
  • Midjourney: Previously used to produce some illustrative images.

We no longer use these tools for new content as we prioritise human-led production.

Financial Transparency

  • Patreon: Our commitment to our supporters remains firm. Patreon funds are used to commission articles and illustrations from human creators. We do not spend this money on any technology at all. Our goal is to put money back into the roleplaying games community, not technology suppliers.
